A quiet base up the river from Missoula
Lost Moose Meadows is in Lincoln, about 77 miles east of Missoula on Montana Highway 200. Much of the drive follows the Blackfoot River, so getting to town and back is part of the fun. If you’d like Missoula within reach but would rather sleep somewhere quiet, with room between you and your neighbors, Lincoln is worth the drive.

Lincoln or Missoula?
Both are good choices. It depends on what you want from your stay.

- You’ll be in town every day for work, school, the university or appointments
- You want restaurants, shopping and nightlife a few minutes away
- You’re only passing through on I-90 for a night
Stay with us if
- You want room between you and your neighbors
- You’d rather hear elk than traffic at night
- You want the upper Blackfoot, forest roads, trails and the Scapegoat Wilderness close by
- You don’t mind a scenic hour and a half into town
The drive
Getting between Lincoln and Missoula
Highway 200 up the Blackfoot
From I-90 just east of Missoula, take the Bonner exit and follow Highway 200 east. The road follows the Blackfoot River through canyons and open valleys, past Clearwater Junction and the turnoff for Ovando, and on into Lincoln. It’s about 77 miles, a paved two lane highway the whole way.
Big rigs
Highway 200 is a common route for RVs and trucks, and our pull-throughs run up to 115 feet, so you can pull straight in when you arrive.
Watch for wildlife
Deer and elk cross the highway, especially early and late in the day. Take it easy around dawn and dusk.
Coming from Glacier
From the north, take Highway 83 south through the Swan Valley and Seeley Lake to Clearwater Junction, then turn east on Highway 200. See our arrival & directions.

Caras Park and A Carousel for Missoula

Worth a stop between Lincoln and Missoula
The Blackfoot River
The lower Blackfoot runs through a pretty canyon with fishing access sites along the highway. See our fishing guide for the river near camp too.
Garnet Ghost Town
One of Montana’s best preserved ghost towns, up in the Garnet Range. Watch for the turnoff along Highway 200, and see our ghost towns page before you go, since the road is gravel.
Seeley Lake
A short detour north on Highway 83 from Clearwater Junction, with a chain of lakes and big larch forests. It’s about 50 minutes from camp.
Ovando
A tiny ranching town just off the highway, popular with anglers and cyclists, and a nice place to stretch your legs.

A day in Missoula from camp
- MorningDrive west along the Blackfoot. On a Saturday in season, start at the market in Caras Park.
- Late morningRide the carousel, then walk the Riverfront Trail and watch the surfers on Brennan’s Wave.
- LunchGrab lunch downtown.
- AfternoonHike the M Trail for the view, or take a summer tour at the Smokejumper Visitor Center.
- EveningStock up on groceries, then head home up the river and end the day by the fire.
